For a novel that revels in absurdity, Colony is surprisingly inspirational about the human condition and hopes for the future.

It begins with the (anti) hero, Eddie O'Hare in an artificially created pleasure city in Antarctica, which bears a striking resemblance to Las Vegas on acid. He is there in a last-ditch bid to win the money to buy off untimely demise. A series of unlikely coincidences involving hitmen, jackpots and trading identities with his super-competent alter-ego, Charles Perry Gordon, means that Eddie takes his place amongst the Pilgrims: They are Earth's answer to the coming apocalypse; the cream of humanity, selected to crew a 'Generation Ship', a spaceship that will take several human lifetimes to reach the nearest Earth-like planet. Eddie meets his untimely demise some time after blast-off thanks to psychotic hitman. Fortunately, his head is placed in suspended animation until such time as his consciousness can be rehoused. Eddie is revived many generations in the future to a spaceship peopled by the descendants of the original crew, including a pimply adolescent captain, a priest who is a sadistic voyeur, and a science officer who is a religious zealot. The spaceship is falling apart along with the command structure and Eddie is the only one who can save them. And somebody is still out to get him.

This novel is manically comic and chock-full of suspense. Intriguing scientific speculations about the nature of time, and important social and political points about eugenics and the nature power are wrapped up in a burlesque take on Pilgrim's Progress. Ultimately, it defies description, and should really just be read; its whole is significantly more than the sum of its parts. KIRKUS UK
